After an event like SXSW, you settle in, relax, reflect… then enjoy the treasures you may have discovered. Scroll down to get a peek into an “accidental score” of a 45 nugget that fell into my lap…
Here’s how it goes down for this little treasure: DJ Platurn sets up for a post SXSW RockSteady Mondays show, this past Monday. The music from the house system plays “My Friend” by Groove Armada. It’s got a Brandy reference…but that’s not what’s central to this theme… As I switch the system over to the turntables that Platurn is set up on, I hear the same guitar riff and bass-line… a bit confusing, because usually when you switch from what’s playing on the house Ipod to the the music of the DJ, you usually get a completely different experience…Mr. Clever (Platurn) discovered the source of the sample used in the Groove Armada track playing on the house Ipod and is playing it!… So ofcourse I race over to him to find out what he’s actually playing and it’s this little nugget (lucky for me, Platurn allows me to trainspot!): “Gotta Learn How To Dance”- Fatback Band
(I should also mention that Platurn was not familiar with the Groove Armada track prior to this above scenario)
Here’s the actual kicker: on my way out of Austin, on Friday morn (3 days before the Monday described above), I’m reluctant to make any stops because I’m told of a forest fire that has Hwy 71 (the quicker route to Houston) closed both ways. BUT!…I’m passing by End of An Ear, one of my favorite record shops in Austin. About an hour later, I walk out with a stack of 45s, including “Gotta Learn”…EXCEPT, I bought it for the B Side: “Do The Bus Stop” , and had no real awareness that I actually bought “Gotta Learn”, as well (the A Side). I SCORED!
All this to say that I’m super-excited to get behind the turntables tonight to play an all-45 set at Onion Creek: 7-10pm
